NEW MEDIA
2016-2020
VICE Media
200 million unique visitors a month means scaling and launching constantly while cleaning up behind you.
SCENARIO
VICE was scaling at breakneck speed but was juggling a lot of legacy moving parts at the same time from when the internet was less evolved.
SOLUTION
Launch a dozen verticals, spin up another dozen microsites, unify three CMS platforms, Redesign every vertical under a unified platform, then launch a cable news channel all in less than 4 years.
First in the door

VICE HIRED AN INTERNAL DIGITAL DESIGNER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2013
What started as launching co-branded microsites for partners and events quickly scaled into adding onto existing websites to support new content and spinning up entire new verticals.
Launching a dozen verticals
VICE AS A TEMPLATE
Spinning up a new vertical was always on a tight deadline and very rarely had content prepped for it ahead of time to work from which was a challenge but unlocked creative choices at the same time.
UNIFYING THEM ALL
Combining a decade of online work into one unified CMS meant it was also time to align all the verticals to share a common aesthetic and design system while still maintaining their unique identity.
LAUNCHING NEWS AND MOBILE ADDITIONS
VICE was expanding into serious news as well and with the design and launch of VICE News came opportunities for timeline based events and daily updates.
Launching a cable channel
VICELAND ON THE WEB
VICE had just bought a tv channel and was going to bring the online content and culture to the traditional broadcast model. This required creating a website, video player, and live stream of all the VICELAND content for the web. All work was done based on brand identity created by Gretel and in collaboration with VICE creative director Spike Jonze throughout the process.
